Medicare Mandatory Reporting Requirement
Latest Activity — The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a notice in the Federal Register seeking public comments on the agency’s Section 111 Mandatory Insurer Reporting Requirements. PIAA submitted a comment letter to CMS in response to the notice on March 13, 2017.
Latest Activity — On October 4, 2016, CMS issued a final regulation that bans pre-dispute mandatory arbitration agreements.
Latest Activity — The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) recently convened the fourth quarter meeting of the AHRQ National Advisory Council. This advisory panel of leaders from the healthcare industry received updates from AHRQ staff on the Agency’s latest activities and provided strategic guidance to AHRQ staff on various issues. A short summary of this meeting is provided below.
National Practictioner Data Bank
Latest Activity — The National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) recently requested comments on proposed changes to some of the information it collects from both reporting and querying entities. According to the NPDB, the changes were designed to “prevent redundant and unnecessary forms, improve user error recovery, and improve overall data integrity.” PIAA submitted a formal comment letter noting that new data fields for medical liability reports would potentially increase the time burden of reporting. PIAA also recommended that the NPDB do additional outreach to stakeholders to explain its rationale for the changes.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Rules
Latest Activity — Final HIPAA rules were released in January 2013 and became effective on March 26, 2013. Compliance has been required since September 23, 2013.
Federal Insurance Office
Latest Activity — The Federal Advisory Committee on Insurance (FACI) convened on December 7, 2017 for its 4th Quarter meeting. The U.S. Treasury Department also released a new report that outlines several recommendations related to the regulation of the insurance and asset management industries. A short summary of the FACI meeting and the full Treasury Department report are provided below.
